All teachers want students to be engaged and understand the basic curriculum that they are being taught, I want this for the students I teach as well. I would like students to learn how to be a life-long learners in my classroom and to be a literate reader of scientific texts. In addition, as a teacher I would like students to think critically, be able to use problem solving strategies and find a way to work productively. I hope to foster a learning environment in which the students have a clear idea of their responsibilities and can advocate for themselves as a result. As a teacher I would like to maintain a patient demeanor, be clear and direct in the manner in which I teach, to continually take the whole child into account when teaching and I would like to be a constant collaborator.

During teaching I have been a firm believer that the grade span expectations and National standards should be used to direct the curriculum of a teacher. If teachers teach according to the book only they may not cover every single content expectation that the student needs to learn. when teachers do this they set the student up for failure by not preparing the student future educational venues. I also consider teaching from the book a very teacher centered way of teaching and it does not provide much hands- on learning for the student. I hope to engage my students by including inquiry activities and labs as part of the curriculum. I think these activities aid in creating a classroom environment in which the students have more control of their learning. I think students are more apt to learn the content if they are more involved in their learning

Literacy is a main component of learning. With out the proper tools to gain information people will have a difficult time learning. In the clasrsroom both in the middle and high school I have modeled with different text in science how to read the text. I have explained the importance of referencing the picture and tables when a text directs a reader because it creates a bigger picture of the concept and can make connections which makes the reading more understandable. As I proceed as a teacher in my own classroom I would like to continue to promote science literacy with my students.

In the classroom, I hope to model reasons why everyone should consider themselves a life-long learner. I have never proclaimed to know everything, but I think it is important for people to continually learn. Not knowing does not make people less than others, but I think that students can have that the impression that it does. Learning is part of growing as a complete person regardless of what is being learnt. In the classroom, I have been reminding students that no answer is a stupid answer. If you are seriously think about the topic than you can still learn why your answer is wrong and come to a more complete idea of the concept that you had before. I hope to instill in students that if they do not know answer to a question or do not know about a certain topic that they have tools available to help the find the answer. I would like to model to the students through my teaching that If I do not know the answer I simply research and discover the answer.

I would hope that modelling characteristics of a life-long learner would also reinforce student responsibility in their learning as well as be a productive work environment. I have noticed while teaching that some students would rather not ask a question which could provide clarification for the problem they are solving and will leave questions blank. I think students think that they are doing something wrong by asking questions at certain times. In high school, middle school I remember feeling in a similar manner. For instance I would sometimes feel that I was going to be judged because I asked a question that was to simple. Students need to advocate for themselves to aid in their learning. I have been trying to reinforce that with one on one interactions with students and explaining what I would do in a similar position. I also try to model similar behavior in the classroom when I am teaching

Lastly, teachers create a learning venue for their students which should foster learning for all students. Part of that learning environment includes the demeanor and preparedness of the teacher. Being the most prepared for a class makes teacher performance significantly better. I think when teachers rush or use short cuts when designing a lesson the manner in which it is implemented is changed as well. It too seems rushed and not up to par. As a teacher I also would like to collaborate as much as possible. I believe that collaboration may enhance a teachers lesson an dis part of being prepared to teach. When teachers collaborate they have an opportunity to see a different point of view from their own.It also reinforces the idea of being a life-long learner.
